#40 – 50 runs in 100 days

This morning I had planned to run a tough hilly long run and Malin Präntare wanted to run part of the run and maybe Eva Berg. The sun came out in the morning so it looked like was going to be a beautiful run. Since I cannot run on asphalt too long with my Fellraisers I decided I would use my spikes at St Hans hills. I had asked one ultra runner what would be good to bring on an ultra race and he was using dextros so today I would test two back packs and a new sports drink brand: Enervit Orange Flavor and dextrose. Drink every 2.5K and dextrose every 5K.

Was suppose to run from my home at 11.00 (11 am) but ran a bit late. When I got to St Hans hills I put on my spikes and waited for Malin to show up and we ran the new trail alignment on St Hans Extreme and on the third lap Eva Berg joined us on the third and fourth lap. We saw Anna, another Coach K Runner. During this run we discussed Triahtlon Sprint and Massage. Eva was not going to run the flat run so we said goodbye to her and I took off the spikes and then Malin ran with me to Nöbbelöv and we decided it would be better to run back so from now on I was on my own.

At 15.5K I had to walk 1K because my right knee complained and then I also had to walk at 21K because of the knee again. When I got back to St Hans hills I put on the spikes again. Now my calfes started to feel very tired and I also Mats J, Another Coach K Runner, who was going to run on the hills and asked me how many laps and I told him 8. So when I got back to St Hans I ran 4 laps before it was time to run back home.

The goal from the very beginning was 35K but the last K’s were very tough and ended up with 34K.

Total time: 5.21.56 h, average speed: 9.28 min/k due to walking 2x1K, max speed: 4.37 min/k

#37 – 50 runs in 100 days

Tonite it was time again for ski walking / running with walking poles.

So it was time to put on the mandatory reflective vest and head light. And of course my Fellraisers.

Two weeks ago when I was here last time it was light when I got up to St Hans hills but now it was pitch dark. So one light after the other showed up 🙂

IMG_1718_141029

First it was warmup: jogging, indian jumps, kick in the butt and then repeat 5 jumps on the right foot and then 5 jumps on the left foot, repeat 10 long jumps. I was a bit absent-minded and forgot to leave my water belt on the top hill.

Then it was time for getting to the longest hill and walk with poles half way and then run with poles to the top.

After that we did an exercise where we did 20 runs with poles up towards the top and then 10 walks with poles down and repeated this til we got to the top hill. Me and another girl got confused because after I had done 20 runs the people in front of me continued up so I was thinking that maybe Tomas meant 20 on each foot so 40 runs to the top and 20 down. We stood and discussed this on the top and then when Tomas got down to the starting point it was 20 runs on one foot (=40 runs total). This was also a repeat.

Then we ran with the poles down to the grove, 10s regular plank and then ran up the steepest part of the top hill with poles 5 times.

Then we did my favorite exercise: 5 low lunges, 5 pushup repeated this til we got to the top  and then while we waited for the last people we stood in ”Jägarevila”.

Finished with squats on the left foot, then sqauts on the right foot x 5.

After that 1 lap on St Hans Extreme with poles, Tomas’s variation and then we were done.

#32 – 50 runs in 100 days

IMG_1645_141019

This morning these warriors including myselft (the photographer) conquered the rain and met up at Frostavallen to run a trail run.

Some of us had been running hilly running before and in the Woods. Some were experienced trail runners.

Personally it was fun that Lars who is the organizer of the trail ultra race in December were joining us. I asked a little about the race and as I was suspecting we are most of the time on our own.  This trail run would go on the trails that will be part of the ultra race in December. There will be some functionaries where it won’t obvious where to run. So it was decided that I would lead the group to see if I would make it 🙂

Like I have said before I do not like to run when it is raining and was it raining today? YES

Since I am a ultra rookie I asked Lars what I should bring me on this ultra race since it is going to be fuel stations every 10K. I got the tip to have dextrose and of course fluid. Eat every 5K and drink every 2.5K. I need to test if I can handle dextrose.

In the beginning most of us tried to avoid the little puddles but when our socks already were wet, in the end we didn’t care.

It was a great group to run with. Some were a bit faster and did run back from time to time when I was not in the lead.

In August I ran with Åke, Eva and Sinead and there was a very steep hill that I ran up then but today it was just too tough so I had to walk.

First we ran on the green trail, then white, black, green and orange. When we had run 16.5K it was time to run back and we were sticking together for a while and then in the end Roger and I came a bit behind. So we came out from the Woods and turned somewhere 🙂 and I asked Roger if we have been running the correct path because I felt that we couldn’t be so far away from the other 🙂

We followed the orange trail, then the green trail and came back to the two steepest hills and something told me that wandered a bit too far away. We had to decide if we would continue on the black or green trail. Lucky me I had Åke’s mobile number and called him. Åke was very surprised that we ended up where we ended up 🙂 Stay on the gravel road and I will come and get you. At that time both Roger and I was very tired.

So total distance: 21.71K, total time: 2.46.13 h, average speed: 7.42 min/k, fastest speed: 4.14 min/k

Here you can see where I and Roger ran

map_141019

And here is the altitude on this run (where I and Roger ran)

altitude_141019

After I had changed to dry clothes (forgot to bring extra socks), we had fika and after talk.

IMG_1667_141019

Did I enjoy this run? NO but the really nice Fall landscape compensated for the really bad weather. I do not think I was dry anywhere after this run. DId I regret it. No. The scenery was amazing. Unfortunately all my pictures in the woods were blurry and will not be posted.

#31 – 50 runs in 100 days

This afternoon I had decided I would do this long run. Today the preparation for my next goal started for real. Originally I had planned to run it Sunday but felt sore in my throat. Then I rescheduled for yesterday but was too sore from the Nordic Walking pass. This morning it was raining heavily.

The run would first be 3 laps on St Hans hills, then a longer flat run and then back on St Hans hills with 3 laps and then home.

Filled my bottles with Maxim Tropical in two bottles and water in two bottles and in one pocket kexchoklad (=chocolate).

Was going back and forth between using my regular running shoes and then on St Hans hills spikes or my Fellraiser. Fellraise is not good to use on longer asphalt parts but when I ran one lap Wednesday evening and it was slippery (had my Fellraiser) and it has continued to rain I decided to use my Fellraiser.

Today I tested to have the GPS in my waistband. Ran up to St Hans hills and ran three laps. My feet got wet. But the good thing is that the water seems to get out of the shoes. The shoes do not get super wet. On the circle hill I ran on a grass part since it was very slippery on the sand part. I dropped two sports drink bottles and got one back. Realized that I had dropped the second one but find that one 🙂 Let me tell you it is easier to find water bottles then a key 🙂

IMG_1636

After that I ran a longer flat part. Below is a picture of a meadow but as you can see, it looks more like a sea, that is how much it has been raining lately.

I had some Heavy upwind and the rain came back so I was struggling a bit and felt in my knees that I was not using my regular running shoes. There was a guy running behind me and passed me of course 🙂 And I thought how great it would have been if I would have been a faster runner, then this run would be over soon.

IMG_1638

I got back to St Hans hills and was wondering how dark it would become during these three last laps, forgot to put my headlight in my pocket. The first lap was ok, on the second lap it started to be a bit darker so I did not run down the amphitheater, because of security reasons and then on the third lap I realized I had lost on bottle with sports drink and did only run up to the grove after the archery, because of security reasons. The dark came much faster then I expected. I ran some extra in Annehem before I head home.

So to sum it up, did I enjoy this run, NO! but now I have a new longest training run: 31.9K

Distance: 31.9K, total time: 04:00:47 h. Average speed: 7.35K. Hilly run was approximately 15K. Very tired in my calves. Did not regret the run even if I did not enjoy it.

Tonite it was time again for ski walking / running with walking poles.

So it was time for premiere of reflective vest and head light.

IMG_1631_141015

When I ran up to St Hans I tested to have the GPS on my upper arm this time and it was light outside. I got an advice to use terrain running shoes so I was using my Salomon Fellraiser.

It had rained all day and when I started my run it was drizzle. I have to admit I do not like to exercise when it is raining.

We were some people who showed up even if the weather was grey, rainy and colder. When I got to the top there was a CKR guy who stood there with un umbrella that I also could stand under til the rest showed up 🙂 Thanks!

Just before the warmup the rain stopped 🙂

The  warmup consisted of running, indian jumps, back kicks and then repeated 10 long jumps  and then repeated 5 jumps on one foot and then 5 jumps on the other foot.

After that the training started with, from the longest hill, walking with poles half of the hill and then run up the last part of the hill. My  walking technique is ok but I still have to work on the running part. You are not running but jump more,

Then we went down to middle hill and ran to the top, went down to the longest hill and walked half of the hill and then ran half of the hill to the top. Repeated this twice and then one more time running from the middle hill. I now can run all the way to the top 🙂

Arms must work here and you feel it in your arms after a while 🙂

Then we had an exercise where we ran down from the top hill to the grove, 10s regular plank and then run up the steepest part of the top hill, repeated this 5 times. My legs were ”burning” on the last laps.

Then we went down to the grove. Did every other 5 lunges , 5 pushups til we came up to the top hill. While we waited for the rest of the group we had to stand in ”Jägarvila”. My legs were tired tonite so I had to shake my legs a couple of times.

Then some of us ended this exercise with one Tomas lap on St Hans Extreme. It was really tought running this lap in the dark, even if I had a head lamp, it was hard to see how gooey it was at some places. The ”circle hill” was very gooey so I walked. Even my Fellraiser did not work this time.

On this exercise the muscle soreness starts already during the exercise. First my upper arms, then lower back and then front thighs and calves.

#28– 50 runs in 100 days

collage_141011

This morning I and Roger ran in Bokskogen.

The plan was to run a 2K + 10K run, total 12K.

When we looked at the map we decided that we would run the 2K first and then the 10K.

The temperature was perfect, around 15oC (59F). Had a long sleeve shirt first but took it off after a while (had a t-shirt under the long sleeve shirt).

We were running the 2K run correct and then we ran the 10K.

We talked a lot on this 10K run. I told Roger who has not run Yddingeloppet yet, there you have the longest hill on Yddingeloppet and then we turned to the right and after 1K we realized that somewhere we did not run correctly and decided to run back. We improvised first and just chose a path and then came back to the 10K and realized that instead of running straight at one part we should have turned right 🙂 So we did that this time and at the longest Yddinge hill we should have run on it and did it this time too.

So do not talk too much or keep track of the markers is a good advice 🙂 Something to think about when I am going to run the ultra trail in December.

So due to our wandering we ended up running 14.27K, total time: 1.32.02 h, average speed: 6.26k/min and fastest speed: 4.24 min/k using Garmin Forerunner 310XT

The scenery was gorgious. Fall colors.

#26 – 50 runs in 100 days

This morning I had the pleasure of running with two experienced trail runners, Åke and Robert. I took the train up to Höör and Åke picked med up at the train station and then we picked up Robert on our way to Fulltofta (which by the way is not located south of Lund 🙂

Before I walked down to the bus I realized it would be better to walk in wider trekking shoes instead of my Fellraiser 🙂 I got blisters on both my little toes from yesterday’s run.

When we got to Fulltofta I felt that it would be good to add an extra Compeed on my right little toe, which has suffered the most yesterday.

First Robert and Åke discussed the trail run, we decided we would run 14K and then decide if we would be satisfied or run 6K more.

Then the mandatory group picture

IMG_1537_141005

Since I was the least fastest runner they would try to keep my pace but Robert disappeared from time to time but slowed down eventually. Since we didn’t bring any water there was a spring and also cups to use so we drank some water and took a short break.

IMG_1541_141005

It was such a joy running in the woods over stones, roots and ”spongar” (= boards) and test my Fellraiser. This is the reason why I bought Salomon Fellraiser to use for trail runs.

When we got close to 14K we all felt fresh (despite my blisters) and decided to continue running. Fellraiser are good to use when it is gooey but you can still stumble if you do not lift your feet. Lucky me I did not fall on the ground but was close one time. When you get tired you stumble more and I hit my front big toes 🙂

Something was not right with the pulse watch during this run, the distance did not make any sense 🙂 I brought this up with the guys. I thought that I had saved yesterday’s run but then Robert informed that I have to push the Reset button on the Garmin for at least 3s, I guess that was not the case yesterday 🙂

IMG_1556_14105

IMG_1557_141005

After the run it was time for ”fika” and the guys ate pan cakes and I ate a cinnamon roll.

IMG_1559_141005

Distance: 18.88K     Total time:2.17 h      Average speed: 6.51 min/k using Garmin Forerunner 310XT

This is definately not my last time I run a trail run.

#25 – 50 runs in 100 days

1_mix_141004

This morning Eva and I decided to run together. Eva wanted to run on Mossen and Vallkärra. I wanted to run on St Hans hills. So we compromised and ran over Vallkärra and 2 laps on St Hans hills. I inaugurated my new Salomon Fellraiser that I plan to use on Yddingeloppet and on the trail race in December. To avoid getting blisters I bought Compeed and put them on my heels.

Eva ran down to Nöbbelöv and then we ran out to Vallkärra. It was nice to see the sun, last week it was raining a lot and also in the beginning of this week. Temperature was perfect, 16oC (61F) and a bit windy, I didn’t feel it was t-shirt weather. During this run we discussed Lidingöloppet and the definition of Glädjepass (= Fun run), that was an interesting discussion. Some private things and how fun it is to run with people.

2_IMG_1528_141004

It was nice being back on St Hans hills again. There were some Freesbee golfers playing so I used the word ”Fore” to let them know we were coming 🙂

3_IMG_1531_141004

What a great day it was, perfect weather and now the Fall is really here. It was gooey at some places at St Hans hills and the Fellraiser were great. I was not gliding at all. I have heard that these are good to run in when it is gooey. So I think I made the right choice when I bought them 🙂

4_IMG_1532_141004

I should have listen to myself and should have bought Compeed for my toes as well. Now I have blisters on my little toes and big toes 🙂 I plan to run tomorrow so I have to buy Compeed today.

Distance: 15.07K, total time: 1.36 h Average speed: 6.25 min/k using Garmin Forerunner 310XT

I have said it before. It is good to run with someone who is faster than you, then you will become a faster runner!

Trail running

IMG_1290_140824.png

This afternoon it was time to run my first trail run up at Frostavallen, approximately 45k from Lund. Eva picked me up around 12.30. In the car was also Sinéad. At Frostavallen Åke also showed up. We were going to run a 15k trail run. Decided to keep my long sleeve shirt on, don’t want to catch a cold now when Lidingöloppet is getting closer.

Some pictures that I have taken today will be blurry, it is an art to run and take a picture at the same time, I decided to publish them anyway.

This was a very beautiful part of the trail run, you cannot see it here but it is Heather on the right side.

IMG_1294_140824.png

Here you can see Eva and Sinéad before we run deeper into the woods.

IMG_1295_140824.png

This trail run blew me away, such beautiful scenery.

IMG_1296_140824.png
IMG_1298_140824.png

Very mixed terrain. We met some people who were out walking their dogs (there was a dog that we saw twice and he wanted to join us) and could have been looking for mushrooms as well.

IMG_1305_140824.png

This was the first very steep hill, from above I heard someone shout, show us now that it paid off all your hilly running at St Hans. I ran the whole hill 🙂

IMG_1306_140824.png

This picture is a bit blurry but it was nice running in the woods

IMG_1308_140824.png

I am a bit behind, Åke, Eva and Sinéad was much faster than me, but it is good to run with faster runners to become a faster runner. I tried to keep up with them 🙂

IMG_1315_140824.png

I practiced running technique on downhill slopes so I caught up with them from time to time.

IMG_1317_140824.png

I understand now that it is probably wise to have trail run shoes on these types of runs. Felt ache on the top on my foot and stumbled a couple of times and could have sprained my foot but blocked good.

IMG_1319_140824.png

Some group pictures after the trail run. Totalt time today: 1.40.04 h

After the trail run some us took a swim in the sea. Very refreshing and cold.

Hilly intervals

backintervaller_140814.jpg

Yesterday it was time to do hilly intervals up on St Hans hills with a bigger group from Coach K Runners. It seemed to be warm so I decided to have linen and shorts and of course water belt. On my way up there I ran to Eva to give back her mom’s wet suit that I was suppose to borrow to use at Sövde Triathlon sprint but unfortunately it was too small for me. Just before we left to get up to St Hans the sun disappeared and it started to get cold, not a good sign. While we were waiting for everyone to show up it also looked like it could start raining at any moment.

Even if the focus right now is on Lidingöloppet in September these hilly intervals are my first sneak preparation for my first Ultra that I was suppose to do next year in May but now it seems that it might happen this year.

Yesterday Mats had the great honor to be in charge. We started with warm up and then it was time for the first interval on the longest mountain, the people who was doing Kullamannen in May had to start a bit further down. I do not know what happened with myself but I rushed up that long hill, I who have been one of the people who had gotten up there last. After that it was time for the second interval on the middle longest mountain and I flew up that mountain too.

Then Mats decided to have the third interval on a new hill, not new to us who have run St Hans Extreme, We ran up a shorter hill and then up the ”circle” hill, then down the grove, turned to the right and up the steepest part from the right and then down the grove again, to the left and up the steepest part to the left and then the right and left parts twice again before that interval was finished.

The fourth interval was up the longest hill again but over the amphitheater which is the worst hill on the new trail alignment on St Hans Extreme and I just flew over that hill too. I was definately on fire yesterday.

The fifth interval was on the middle longest mountain again.

Then the sixth and last interval was on the longest mountain but over the amphitheater.

I do not know where I got my energy from but yesterday I was among the people that got up on those hills first, I had just decided to go for it and push myself.

While we were waiting for everyone to get to the top hill we did the plank (=plankan) which is my favorite core exercise.
