Many changed decisions this week about my trail running today.
First I had planned to get up to Frostavallen and run a 18K run but then I changed mind yesterday. Decided than to run my city trail run which can be either 16K or 21K but when I woke up this morning and saw the grey sky and it was cold I decided that I would run a few laps on St Hans Hills. Was not sure if I would run 4 laps but maybe 3 laps.
I was not so motivated and it took some time before I finally started my run.
My pulse watch did not find my pulse belt and then not found the GPS but I started.
Felt that I had dressed too warm but I would be able to remove my jacket and just run in my wool long sleeve.
Felt pain in my knee early and had to walk a bit. Happened a few times before I got to St Hans Hills. The plan was to run up on all hills.
Saw some freesbee golfers and asked them if they had a competition. Would be good to know, then I would expect a freesbee flying around during my run. It was a club competition.
At one point I had to take off the jacket, got too warm. It was gooey and I had my regular running shoes.
At the beginning of the circle hill it was extra gooey so I took it very easy up that first hill and then I could run again, decided that I would run 2 laps and then I when I was running down a hill I just fell flat on my butt 🙂 At least I fell soft but I got very gooey and wet. It was time to head home 🙂
I could say I had a mud runn today 🙂
I was wondering what people thought when I passed them.
Even if my body was not really with my it was nice running again. Hope it will get warmer soon. The sun was out a few times during my run.
Since Kullamannen beginning of November I have had a hard time heading out on a longer run.
First weekend I felt that I was on my way to catch a cold and decided to not head up to Frostavallen, the second weekend it was raining so I ran a shorter run on the treadmill. Last weekend I was in London with my consulting company and ran a 5K morning run on Friday.
Now it was time to head out on a longer run and decided to run my city trail run. Was not sure if I would run the short version or the long version.
It was snowing yesterday but I felt it wouldn’t stay and it was raining during the night.
Cold, grey and drizzle when I started. My knee felt good.
This summer when I got to the long uphill road in the neighborhood my legs refused to run up that road but today I made it all the way 🙂 Felt so good. Not breathless either.
Before the first hill part I ran close to the fields and it was gooey, something told me I might expect the same when I got to Klosterängens höjder (Klosterängens hills) and oh boy, say the goo and also realized that it was slippery so I had to walk up and down some hills there but then I could run on the dirt road down and up.
So I decided that I wouldn’t run up the second hill part, instead make a detour to get around 17K.
At 13K I started to feel pain in my right knee but this time it was not at the back, it was at the side so I decided to walk shortly.
During the last part of the route I got issues in my right thigh and groin and was forced to walk some more but I was satisfied with the route.
Ran up all the way on the road in the neighborhood for the first time
Ran 13K before I ran into issues with my right knee, wonder if the gooey slippery part made me walk ”funny” which caused the issue
For the last couple of weeks I feel that I am getting there, running pain free. Hope that more gym, Yoga and massage every other week will do the trick.
Nov 4th I will run a race called ”Double Death” (=Dubbeldöden), a 44K ultra race with with a total altimeter of 2000 m. I have been prepared that I will run in the dark and needed to invest in a very good headlight. This race is on Kullaberg and it will be pitch dark.
I asked my running buddy Lars what headlight I should buy, he is running a lot in the dark and have good equipment. He suggested a Lumonite Air 1500.
When I signed up for this race I thought it would start around 9 am , at the latest 10 am and then would be 1-1.5h in the dark and I was ok with that. But then I found out that it would start at 12.30 which would mean I would be 3.5 h in the dark, now I started to doubt myself.
Kullamannen consists of many races and I have run the ”Death Zone” twice and know that I can do that and needed a new challenge, decided to sign up for two laps and also the experience of running in the dark and have prepared for this during the year. From that day that I found out that it would start after lunch I have thinking a lot of my safety. This is a very tough race, technical difficult, it could be very wet (wet stones) and gooey. Part of me have wanted to just run one lap but then I get angry at myself because this is what I wanted.
So I wanted to test this headlight and what better company could I have then running with my running buddy Lars. I asked Lars if we could have a night running with my new headlight so I took the train to Tjörnarp and met him at the train station. Put the headlight on and off we went.
Of course we needed to do this when it was dark and I put on my headlight and wow what a light. Lars who is a much faster runner than me got a very fast pace from the beginning and I just had to try to keep up with him, got breathtless. We would run around 16K.
Of course it was a lot of running talk during this run. We both still remember that day when I went with Lars to Vallåsen where we ran up and down the hill called Halmstad (no 11 on the map). I never thought that I would keep up with Lars, with his pace, never thought that I would be able to run as many laps as Lars but I did, that was one of the toughest runs I have done.
Part of this route that we ran was on Tjörnarparen that I will participate in December, a 50K ultra race, starting in Tjörnarp, but I also ran at outside of Tjörnarparen so I saw other parts as well.
We also talked about The ”Double Death” and my doubts and Lars asked what I am afraid of, the dark? No I am not afraid of the dark but I am afraid of my safety, Lars was wise, it is so true, if I think that I am going to injure myself I probably will so no negative thoughts.
This turned out to be a threshold training, I have never run a trail run so fast as I did. Good to run with somebody who is running faster with you, I also ran up a longer hill, if I have been running alone I would have walked.
At the end when it was 2K left Lars said that now we have to get up the pace so you do not miss the train, they go once in an hour. So I had to keep up with Lars, was very close to respiratory distress. And then when we got to the train station he said that now it is 15 min left, he tested me and I managed.
One time Lars asked me if I was thinking I was running in the dark and to be honest it was almost like running during the day except that it was night, I fell one time but not because it was dark, I have fallen during the day time.
So now I have finally made up my mind to do those two laps
Distance: 16.46K, time: 1.53.29.4h, average heart rate: 157, average pace: 6.53 min/k, max pace: 5.33 min/k, cadence: 168, VO2 Max: 30 ml/kg/min
Today I was waking up 5 am to get ready for the last run on Kullaberg before the race in November 4th that I have prepared for this year.
If you do not have a car it will be the longer ride, 40 min train ride to Helsingborg and then wait for 20 min for the bus which takes 1 h to Mölle bus station.
Arrived to a very windy Mölle, fleece was already on but gloves was very needed as well. Chilly start. Had to use my eyeglass to find the right route, here in this area I would be lost without following the route.
Really windy when I ran near the harbour and then after 100 m I have this steep road among the villas. Had to stop and walk. Felt that I had to get rid of the fleece when I would get into the woods.
Later I also took off the buff that I had on my head, got a bit too warm.
Then this narrow gooey path, knew how this day would be 🙂
After I had run on the steep hill into the woods I decided to stop and take off the fleece to get some air.
Some longer steeper hills that I had to walk on.
Yesterday I finally got my new trail shoes that I have planned to use on the race in November, in August I felt that my Altra Lone Peak 2.5 didn’t have such a good grip anymore.
Nice color too.
Realized that it was more wet than in August.
Find my way around til I got to the part where you are running down to the stone part, had some difficulty to find my way down but managed, just had to stop and slowly get back on track.
The stone part before Nimis was wetter than August so I just had to take my time, be cautious, the only issue is not that it is wet but also loose stones.
This time I had decided that I had to find the right path up Nimis and I did, I even decided to get off the regular path and turned out that I had made the right decision.
The stony part and Nimis are two of the three tough part on this race.
Quite breathless when I had climbed up Nimis, here I have use of my climbing experience in my earlier life.
Just after have climbed up Nimis there is a tough hill but then it is some catching breath before Håkullen. This time I had planned not to injure myself and chose the Håkullen path that was at the race last year. Everything was fine in the beginning but then I got off track, some cursing when trying to get back on track but then I just decided to get up and then it would solve itself and it did 🙂
I started to hate the goo, this was definite the run with most goo, I could not even avoid it so the trail shoes got well run in if you know what I mean.
It felt good knowing that I was getting closer to the light house.
More trekkers today then other runners, met some runners that I said hi too.
At the lighthouse it was very windy and there is some tougher parts before I get back to regular running with some uphills wheren I had to walk again plus also during the run take it easy over the wet stones.
Such a relief to get down to the beach, just had top pass some slower trekkers, I was in a hurry to finish and get inside 🙂
Then it was only 800 m back to the harbour.
Finished with late lunch at Hotel Kullaberg.
Distance: 21.49K, time: 4.46.24h, average heart rate: 139, average pace: 13.20 min/k, max pace: 5.18 min/k, cadence: 140, VO2 Max: 27 ml/kg/min
Tough week after one week’s cold, started with 9 intervals Wednesday and this morning it was time to run my longer trail run.
Original plan was 35K, would end the run with some running on Kivik’s hills.
I was hoping it would’t rain.
Decided to wear long sleeve, capri tights.
Temperature: 13oC (F), a bit chilly in the beginning but then I was just fine, perfect weather, not too cold, not too warm.
It definately had been raining because it was more gooey than 2 weeks ago.
Also felt that I still was tired after the hilly intervals Wednesday so some walking because of that.
Trekker weekend again, met some bigger groups during my run.
Once again I had to walk on some parts where there were horses, cows or a mix.
After the foot path and I had run on the orange marker I heard a birdsong and suspected it could be a bird of prey and I was right. I saw the bird of prey up in a tree which flew away but I couldn’t say which one it was.
Today it was a calf that was not afraid of me, cows are the animals that runs away when I show up but this calf looked up but did not walk towards me but did not run away either, that was new. But I got aquainted with three horses at the beginning of the orange marker after the foot path.
One of the foals that almost attached my ultra back pack two weeks aga, they were very indescreet, was not afraid but had a distance.
Then I finally got to Haväng, nice to run near the water. So when I was at Vitamölla I had run approximately 29K and got up on Kivik’s hills. Those hills was a challenge and I got very tired in my calves and felt that I was just fine after 30K so I cut the distance.
And the best, the ”ice cold” swim in the ocean afterwards, my feet was ice cold but the rest of the body was just fine and I did not freeze on the beach when I changed back to regular clothes.
Distance: 30.08K, time: 4.34.59K, average heart rate: 134, average pace: 9.09 min/k, max pace: 5.27 min/k, cadence: 148, VO2 Max: 26 ml/kg/min
Weight progress
+1.2 KG, not the best to weigh myself in the afternoon when I have eaten breakfast, drinking a lot of water and lunch.
#4 – Transport to St Hans hills
#5 – Hilly intervals
#6 – Transport back to home
I was thinking about it earlier, if I should get a cold a good time would be now. Sunday last weekend in the evening I felt that I was going to get a cold and tried everything in my power to be just fine Monday morning but no such luck.
So I have been off training since Monday, was hoping I wouldn’t run into the same cold as this Spring when I had a cold for 5 weeks. Lucky me I got better every day.
The plan was to run around Kullaberg this Saturday but I had a cough Friday, when I run into a cold I want to be without a cold for a day and then the day after I will train. Saturday in the morning I still had a cough plus it started raining in the morning.
Am careful when I have a cold with a cough, not starting training to soon otherwise the cough will be very difficult to get rid of.
Monday this week I had a cough in the morning so decided not to run during lunch, planned being at the gym yesterday but decided to not do it either. Had a slightly cough this morning but decided to give it a try to train today. Maybe not the smartest thing to start with hilly intervals.
I heard it rain when I slept and when I woke up this morning it was raining so I planned to do hilly intervals instead on the boring treadmill at the gym because it would very likely wet and gooey but then in the afternoon the sun came out. I had decided to work from home because I always get started early with work and then I can get off earlier and train also earlier.
When the sun got out I changed my mind and decided that I would head up to St Hans Hills and do those 9 intervals that I had planned.
Even if it was 17oC (62.6F) I decided I would wear my capri tights, long sleeve and compressions socks (I had cramp in my left calf this morning and get issues with my right calf after a while during trail running). I was hoping I wouldn’t be too warm but I am not interested in running in another cold short after this one. I really have to be able to stay on my feet to get ready for the ultra race in November now when I am one week behind. On the other hand it is good to have a rest once in a while. It has been a lot of longer trail runs lately with some tougher hills.
Decided not to bring any water. Since I thought it would be very wet and gooey I was going to run in my altra lonepeak.
I ran up to St Hans Hills and got ready for the first interval. Did not think it would go fast today but I didn’t mind since I have been having a cold for a week, I just hoped that I would be able to run those 9 intervals.
I realized that it wasn’t so gooey and wet as I thought and was glad that I changed my mind running on a real hill instead of on a treadmill.
There were some other runners there as well. Some did also intervals on different part of St Hans Hills and some ran the St Hans Extreme route.
Always tough when I get to the top. Really breathless and have to catch my breath before I run down to the starting point again. Waited til I got below 140 in heart rate before I started to run down to the starting point.
Catched my breath til I was around 124 in heart rate.
It was a bit gooey just before the top, on the first intervals I ran at the side of the most gooey part and then got back on the sandy part.
Then it was time for the second interval, stayed away from the most gooey part again and had to catch my breath on the top. Physilogically I counted down every time at the top so after the first interval I knew it was only 8 left. And on the second interval I knew it was only 7 intervals left, felt easier every time.
Ran down to the starting point and catched my breath, I noticed that when I was going down in heart rate I went up a few before I went down again, there must some explanation for that.
On the third interval I fel sore in one of my back thighs and hoped it wouldn’t get worse.
Breathless at the top and had to get down below 140 before I started to run down to the starting point.
Fourth interval I did not feel sore in the back thigh, breathless at the top once again. Nice view with the sun out.
Fifth interval I decided I would see how it was to run on the gooey part and survived without gliding. Catched my breath at the top.
Felt that I would make it to nine and now I have run more than half of them too.
Sixth was the same, ran on the gooey part.
On the interval 7-9 I was tired in my calves but I made it, good to train on tired calves, they might very likely be that in November on the second lap
And then finally the last interval and I made it, I thought it would be much tougher today but I took it easy. I was fine with running slower, I am not 100% fit yet after having a cold and hope I will be able to run my longer trail run this weekend.
Then it was just to calm down a bit, stretch my right calf and then run back to home.
Nice to see that it is still so green outside even if it is September but I am looking forward to those Fall colors as well.
Distance: 8.58K, time: 1.14.38h, average heart rate: 144, average pace: 8.41 min/k, max pace: 5.23 min/k, cadence: 160, VO2 Max: 30 ml/kg/min
Transport to St Hans Hills: Distance: 1.62K, time: 10.26.7 min, average pace: 6.27 min/k
Transport back to home: Distance: 1.66K, time: 12.50.2 min, average pace: 7.43 min/k (Took some pictures during this run)
Major mile stone today, first time I ran 9 intervals up those hills.
